Lies and Heroes
" You're a liar!"
" No, I'm not!"
" Yes you are! Your father was no hero, he was nothing, you are
nothing!" The other boys laughed and he felt the rage burning inside him. He shouldn’t have
told those stories, they weren’t true, but now it was too late.
"I wasn’t speaking with you," Luke started. "I was talking with my
friend!"
"But I heard it," The boy taunted, "You’re a liar, Skywalker, and a
coward too, you always run away! I guess your father, the ‘hero’, was like you!"
It was more than he could bear. He didn’t care about his Uncle and
how mad he could get. Luke jumped the boy, and hit him as hard as he could. The other kid
was taller, older and stronger, and he didn’t care. They began fighting, hitting wildly.
Before Luke could give him 'a good lesson', a strong arm lifted him up, and a voice he knew
well said: "Stop, Luke, now!"
On their way home, Owen finally spoke. "I can’t leave you alone for a second, Luke.You’re almost ten now, and I should be able to count on you. You’re irresponsible..."
His uncle wasn’t waiting for an answer. Funny how you could be too old, and too young for so many things at the same time!
He decided not to listen, his blue eyes looking far away, to the horizon. He knew his uncle was right, this time, but he didn’t regret the fight. Too many times they had laughed at him. Now, they couldn’t call him a coward, they knew he wasn’t one. His nose was bleeding, but it didn’t hurt much... And, there was something more... His anger had made him stronger, more than he could have imagined; he had 'felt' the other boy’s fear, and he liked this new feeling. But at the same time he knew rage wasn’t something to be proud of...
"Luke, what happened to you?!" His aunt’s face was sweet and worried. They were at home now, and he knew he had a lot of time to think about his newfound strength. He hoped, with a sigh, he was strong enough to face his uncle’s bad mood...
