Perceptions

Perceptions by Mesarthim

I left a world that had no night
With stars so close the sky was white,
To follow duty,
Soothe my mind
And, heavy hearted, looked behind...

I saw the stars that blinded me
Streak into obscurity
I turned away
How could I know
I had it all so long ago.

A thousand truths and more I've learned
By pain endured and virtue earned
But all I've gained could never start
To fill the hollow of my heart.
For truth, like beauty, possibly
Can be so great
One cannot see it standing close,
Distance can
Improve perception in a man.

It frames in time, and space, the view
Of stars
And worlds
And friends
And you.

You I miss more than the sight
Of treetop flames in Endor's night
More than the skies of Patamon,
More than the man who called me 'son'.

I tried to leave you far behind
To cut you from my heart and mind.
I reached the stars, but not my goal,
I never cut you from
My soul.
