Submission Guidelines for Another Sky
Work may be submitted on paper, as an e-mail attachment or on disk in Word 97 or Plain Text format to Melanie Guttierrez. We will let you know within one month if your submission is accepted. When sending full page art, ready to scan is preferred. Black and white or full color. Due to cost, color art will be black and white in printed zine and color on this site.
Keep in mind that Another Sky is printed before it is posted. Contributors of three or more pages of work are entitled to a free printed copy of the zine.
Another Sky is always open for submissions to future issues.
Submission DOs and DON'Ts
DO:
- Do be creative! There are millions of planets and races in the SW galaxy. Some important (and known to all) due to their involvement with the Rebellion and it’s main characters; others who live on the periphery of the war.
- Focus on the Mythology, Mysticism and Magic of the Jedi and the Star Wars galaxy.
- Create your own characters and worlds. Write about the daily lives of everyday beings. Spies, support personnel, families, people with power and those with none; beings that care about the war and those who don't. The most important thing is to make them interesting.
- Create backgrounds for your characters and places. Send histories, details and maps along with your work if you have them. This will inspire others to expand upon your ideas. (Depending on format and scan quality, certain histories, detail and/or maps may not be included on the site.)
- Feel free to theorize on the first or last trilogies in Alternate Universes apart from the official LFL version. Explore irony, coincidence and tragedy.
- Do illustrate your work if possible. If you can't, we may add art work at our discretion.
- Do let us know if you can help by illustrating some one else’s work.
- Do feel free to make suggestions.
DON'T:
- DON'T send any fiction starring Han. This is a Luke fanzine! Han can be used as a secondary/background character. How much is "too much" is our call. Another Sky will not turn into another Han zine. There are other outlets for such fiction. We encourage you to support them and submit stories to them.
- DON’T submit "slash" stories. NO HOMOSEXUALITY will be printed in this zine. No exceptions, and no apologies. R-rated material is an Editor's call.
- DON'T forget that we proudly admit to a blatant prejudice toward Luke Skywalker, the MAIN character of the SW saga. As far as we are concerned Luke CANNOT look too good in a story. Any derogatory, insulting or patronizing treatment of the Jedi by "good" characters (especially Han) is not acceptable. Respect, reverence, even AWE of Luke is encouraged.
- DON'T hesitate to comment on anything you like, don't like or think we could improve on in Another Sky. Letters of comment, and feedback will be printed as space allows.
Fair Warning
We loathe the pro novels. So much of the fan fic on the Net sounds alike because it follows the so-called Expanded Universe and characters. We have always been aimed toward the minority who are unsatisfied with the status quo. Another Sky is for originals, those who dare to think for themselves.
Any author who wants to get feedback on their work should include their e-mail addys (or a snail mail address, which will NOT be given out to anyone ).Please let us know if you want your e-mail addy included on your story as it appears on this Internet site. Otherwise the Editors will forward comments to you at your request.
Large stories may have to be divided to run in consecutive print issues as there is a 250 page limit.
Internet and Print Policy
Another Sky's policy is simple: It's your work - do what you want with it!
If we like and accept your story, we will print it in our fanzine and eventually post it online with that issue. All writers and artists are free to keep, or post, their work on the net at any time. WE do not think of zines as a "business" or invest large sums of money in large print runs to lower our costs. We print only as many copies as we need and do NOT, therefore, demand exclusive rights to your work for a year or more to "protect our investment." Requiring contributors to relinquish their rights to their own work, not to mention a much larger Internet audience, in order to see that work in a printed zine is - in our view - unnecessary, stupid and wrong. You can have it BOTH ways in Another Sky. Compare other SW fanzine policies to ours - ask why you must surrender so much control for the "honor" of being in print - and think carefully before giving it to anyone.
